Signs of Burnout and Ways to Manage It
Burnout is not a new phenomenon, in fact, it dates back to the mid 1970’s. Fast forward to 2019, more than 40 years later, and The World Health Organization adds burnout to its International Classification of Diseases. Workplace burnout is characterized by three dimensions: 1) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; 2) increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and 3) reduced professional efficacy. If you are experiencing burnout, you are more likely to take sick days and go to the ER, you are less likely to take problems/issues to management, you are more likely to job search, and overall you are less confident in your job.
